WhatsApp chats from your iPhone backup
Your iPhone's backup carries your WhatsApp history, and Text2Store reads it: groups, photos, and reactions, browsable and searchable beside Apple Messages, with the same exports.
The short version
Back up your iPhone with an up-to-date Text2Store and a WhatsApp tab appears beside Apple Messages. No pairing, no QR codes, no cloud: the chats come out of the same local backup your texts do. Archives made with older versions do not contain WhatsApp data, so if the tab is missing, update, then make a fresh backup.
What's included
- Conversations and groups, with the group's name and its member list.
- Photos, video, and other media that were still on the phone when you backed up. Media WhatsApp had offloaded from the device is stated as sent but not included, never silently dropped.
- Reactions, grouped the way WhatsApp shows them ("❤️ 2"). Click a reaction to see who reacted.
- Names, the way WhatsApp itself resolves them: your address book first, then a member's self-chosen name shown with WhatsApp's own "~" prefix, then their phone number. An unidentifiable sender is shown as unknown rather than being guessed.
- Edits: a message you edited is marked as edited, with its final wording.
- Search across every WhatsApp conversation, with the same filters as Apple Messages.
The WhatsApp tab
Sources stay separate on purpose. Apple Messages and WhatsApp differ in what a backup can honestly promise (see below), so each has its own tab, its own footer counts, and its own exports, rather than one blended list that blurs the difference. The tab only appears when the archive you are viewing actually contains WhatsApp data.
Exports
Everything you can do with an Apple Messages conversation works here: PDF, CSV, plain text, and Print, plus the two records formats, RSMF for eDiscovery review and the tamper-evident verified export. A whole-backup export sweeps WhatsApp conversations along with everything else.
One honesty note you will see in the files themselves: every export of a WhatsApp conversation carries a short scope note explaining that messages deleted for everyone are not included and that edit history is not recorded. That is WhatsApp's own behavior, described below, and we would rather the export say so than let a reader assume completeness the data cannot promise.
What a WhatsApp backup cannot include
These are properties of how WhatsApp stores data on the phone, and they are different from Apple Messages, so they are worth knowing:
- Messages deleted for everyone are gone. WhatsApp removes them from the device itself, so they are not in the backup to keep. Apple Messages is more forgiving there (deleted texts often survive in a backup for a while, and Text2Store keeps those). The protection is the same for both: back up regularly, and each archive preserves what the phone still had that day.
- Edit history is not kept. An edited message is stored with its final text only; the earlier wording does not exist in the backup. Edits made by the other person may not be marked at all.
- Older archives don't gain WhatsApp retroactively. Archives created before WhatsApp support did not copy WhatsApp's data, and nothing can be recovered from them after the fact. Your WhatsApp history starts with the first backup you make on a version that supports it.
What you need
- An up-to-date Text2Store, and a backup made with it.
- WhatsApp installed on the iPhone you back up. This reads WhatsApp from iPhone backups; Text2Store has no Android version.
- Nothing else. Encrypted backups work the same as for texts, and WhatsApp data is covered by certified backups and archive integrity checks like every other file in the backup.
Unrelated to WhatsApp's own backups
WhatsApp also offers its own chat backup to iCloud. That is a separate mechanism Text2Store neither uses nor touches. Text2Store reads the copy of your chats inside the device backup it makes over the cable, entirely on your computer.
