If you are reading this, the messages themselves probably matter more to you than any software does. This page keeps that in mind. There is no urgency trick coming and nothing here expires; the honest version is that the thread on the phone is probably safe today, and quietly at risk over the coming months and years. The point of acting is not panic. It is that a copy you hold is the only version whose future you control.
What actually puts the messages at risk
- Account and payment lapses. An iCloud subscription that stops being paid eventually stops holding data. Accounts of the deceased can be deactivated by policy or by a family member tidying up, with the best intentions.
- Phone upgrades and trade-ins. The single most common way a thread is lost is an ordinary upgrade a year later: the old phone is wiped for trade-in, and the assumption that "it all transferred" turns out to have been partly true.
- Storage housecleaning. Phones under storage pressure offload attachments; a message may survive while its photos quietly do not.
- The passage of time on a device that is no longer charged, no longer updated, and eventually no longer able to be unlocked by anyone who remembers the code.
This week, without installing anything
- Do not wipe, trade in, or "clean up" the phone, and keep it charged now and then; long-dead batteries and old phones are an unhappy combination.
- Keep the passcode somewhere safe if you know it. Without it, options narrow considerably.
- Pause before signing out of accounts or canceling plans tied to the phone, until you have your copy.
- If the phone belongs to an estate, a quick word with the executor keeps everyone comfortable with what you are preserving. This page is not legal advice, and family situations differ.
Making the permanent copy
